The old water tower

The old water tower is in the district of Dülken in Viersen in the district of Viersen in North Rhine-Westphalia , Albert-Einstein-Straße 1a.

The tower was built in 1889 and entered on September 5, 1989 under No. 220 in the list of architectural monuments in Viersen .

architecture

The tower consists of a conical shaft - approx. 40–75 cm thick brickwork - which rises on a 1.50 m high plastered base. The two residential floors above have eight twin windows. The floor is plastered. The openings are walled up with bricks. The shaft is connected to chimney red bricks blinded of about 20 cm thickness. Circumferential one- and two-layer yellow-colored strips divide the tower horizontally. The storeys are further marked by strong cornices . The console for the outer shell of the head protrudes in a steel girder rib construction on the end cornice, which is about 24 m high with an internal ring support . Between the ribs of double T-beams there is an upward arching brick infill with a thickness of 12 cm.

The wall shell of the head is also made of 24 cm thick bare brick. The roof skin is supported by a steel structure made of carrier rings with high steel profiles above. The container consists of a loft and a cylinder with a pressure ring. It is placed on a strong bearing ring. All steel connections of the water tower are riveted. The container is also composed of approx. 0.5 m large rolled sheet iron. The mighty main inlet and outlet pipe, in conjunction with iron ring brackets, serves as a continuous column support for the individual mezzanine floors.

The first three storey ceilings are built in double-T girders that run in a star shape towards the downpipe and are filled in with bricks. The three floors above are made of wood with purlins and formwork . The tower construction with the container was canceled in January 1988.

The old water tower has a purely functional structure, recognizable in the construction and execution of the still new system. Its appearance, however, is determined by its historical decor. This ambiguity at the turn of the century, namely on the one hand the increasing technical progress and on the other hand the use of historical architectural elements becomes clear here. The old water tower is therefore an important technical monument that is worth preserving for the economic and social urban development of the late 19th century. The water tower is also an important identification feature.

For scientific, in particular technical, economic, social and urban planning reasons, the maintenance and use of the building are in the public interest in accordance with Section 2 (l) of the NRW Monument Protection Act .
