Old Jewish cemetery (Fulda)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The old Jewish cemetery is a non-existent cemetery in the city of Fulda in the Fulda district in East Hesse . The Jewish cemetery was on the site between today's Bahnhofstrasse, Lindenstrasse and Rabanusstrasse. In its place there is now a park ("Jerusalemplatz"), on the site of which there are no more tombstones . A memorial stone on the park wall at the corner of Rabanusstrasse and Sturmiusstrasse commemorates the old cemetery.

history

The old Jewish cemetery has been occupied since the end of the 16th century. It was outside the city wall at that time. The congregation's burials took place there until 1906/07 . Gravestones were preserved from around 1665 until the Nazi era . Other older tombstones (1635, 1654, 1658) were found as stone tiles during the renovation of the seminary and returned to the Jewish community. Further tombstones or tombstone fragments are located near the cathedral in Fulda . After the expulsion of the Jews in the 17th century, they were used as paving slabs or as building material for the cathedral.

In 1928 the cemetery was desecrated by school children .

In 1938/40 the cemetery was cleared and leveled by the city. A park was created in its place, which was preserved after 1945. The bones of those buried in the old cemetery were brought to the new cemetery .

In the basement of the customs office built in 1960 (corner of Lindenstrasse / Sturmiusstrasse) there is a simple memorial room. On the front of it is a plaque with the inscription: This room is dedicated to the memory of the souls of all saints, pious and great in Israel, all men and women of the venerable community of Fulda, who found their resting place here until the cemetery was forcibly closed Time of the reign of terror.
