The Alternate GmbH (proper spelling ALTERNATE ) is an e-commerce company based in Hesse Linden that its products mainly through its own online store sells. The company, founded in February 1992 , is a subsidiary of SHIFT IT Management GmbH & Co. KG Holding together with Wave Distribution and Olano.de as well as other companies . In Linden there are also two shops for computers, hardware , entertainment electronics , grills as well as household appliances , tools , toys and gardening equipment . There are independent branches in the Netherlands and Belgium. Moreover Alternate maintains the e-sports - Clan Alternate Attax .

history

The company was founded on February 3, 1992 in Giessen . The company name came from a then current Atari keyboard with spelled out key names. At the beginning, the core business was Atari and Commodore computers and accessories. Over the years the product range has been steadily expanded.

On October 15, 1997 the start of the online webshop. This made Alternate one of the first online retailers . In 1998 a branch was opened in the Netherlands, which included a logistics center and a retail shop.

In 2000, a logistics center of around 3,500 square meters was opened in Linden and the computer shop in Linden. In 2019, Alternate will have three central warehouses with a total area of ​​over 35,000 square meters.

In 2003, Alternate was the first German company to sign its own e-sports factory team, Alternate Attax . In the following year, an independent TV & audio shop was set up in Linden. The Dutch branch expanded in 2005 with a new building of 5,600 m² of usable space.

In 2006, Alternate founded the ALTERNATE Sportpark in Linden.

Further branches were opened in Belgium and Vienna in 2007, with the branch in Austria being closed again in 2011.

In 2012 ALTERNATE opened a house & garden shop in Linden.

The “ALTERNAID - Foundation for People in Need” was founded in 2007 through an employee aid project for the victims of the 2004/2005 tsunami disaster. In 2004 photovoltaic systems were installed on the company buildings in Linden. In addition to its in-house projects, the company supports the Deutschland Plus mountain forest project and the Togo project.

In 2016, ALTERNATE generated an annual turnover of 432.3 million euros. According to Statista, this makes Alternate the tenth largest online shop in Germany.

In 2018 the ALTERNATE Group (SHIFT IT Management GmbH & Co. KG Holding) including subsidiaries generated an annual turnover of 712.3 million euros. ALTERNATE GmbH achieved a turnover of 488.5 million euros.

E-sports

Even before founding its own esports team, Alternate had sponsored various esports events and teams. Alternate has been represented at Gamescom since 2002 . According to the company, there is real enthusiasm for gaming and e-sports behind this commitment. With its professional involvement in the gaming industry, Alternate would like to contribute to promoting the development of e-sports outside of youth culture.

On the channel of the live streaming video portal Twitch , in addition to the Alternate Attax, the streamers FisHC0p, Lara Loft , Dizee, Sissor, Tinkerleo and Shlorox are active for Alternate.

Team Attax was presented for the first time at the Games Convention 2003, making Alternate the first German company with its own e-sports factory team.

The multigaming clan and its individual teams have achieved international success in the disciplines Counter-Strike 1.6, Counter Strike: Source, StarCraft II and Racing. The teams are currently active in the games Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds and FIFA. The Attax was provided by a team alternate facility in Linden available where players Clan Wars dispute and can train - also stands here, the trophy cabinet of the clan.
