history

Built in 1698 by the Magistrate of Rothenburg ob der Tauber and opened in 1699 as a "manorial brewery", in 1724 it was named a "free imperial city brewery". It is centrally located within the historic Rothenburg city wall , surrounded by city gardens and half-timbered houses , about three minutes from the Rothenburg market square. On August 13, 1804, Johann Georg Roth bought the "Bräuhaus" and it was privately owned for the first time. Since then, the “Bräuhaus” has changed hands several times, until 1905, master brewer Josef Beugler, great-grandfather of the current owners, became the owner of the “Bräuhaus”.

In 1920 the brewery was relocated to the steam brewery built by Hans Hopf in front of the Klingentor. The Rothenburg brewery in Wenggasse was renamed the malt house as a result of the acquisition and henceforth the old brewery. Both shops (in front of the gate and in the city) were combined and were the only brewery in the city to be run under the name Brauhaus Rothenburg and liquidated in April 2013. The cross barrel vaults in the brewhouse still bear witness to the times of the manorial brewery and the former imperial city glory. The beams of the roof give a picture of the craftsmanship of the earlier builders.
