Old prison in Lauffen am Neckar

The old prison in Lauffen am Neckar in the Heilbronn district in northern Baden-Württemberg is part of the historic fortifications of the Städtle district . A house was later built on top of the medieval round tower.

history

The round tower was probably built around 1274 with the city wall around the Lauffener Städtle . The lower part of the tower consists of shell limestone , the upper part of the tower, also due to later renovations, of sandstone . The tower has been used traditionally as a prison and had over time different terms like Angel Hansen tower , prison tower or Civic Tower . It was once crowned by battlements that were converted into loopholes in the 15th century . Later a small house was added to the tower, whereby the two massive tower floors were used as storage cellars and small animal sheds. The property was inhabited until 1998. From 1999 the Swabian Alb Association renovated the building and has been using it as a club house ever since.
