The old town hall in Buchen (Odenwald) , a town in the Neckar-Odenwald district in Baden-Württemberg , was completed in 1723. The building on the market square is one of the most distinctive landmarks in Beech and a protected cultural monument .

History and description

The previous building was probably a half-timbered building with an open market hall . He fell victim to the great city fire in 1717, which was triggered by a lightning strike in the tower of the neighboring city church. The current building was built in late baroque style by 1723. The cost of 787 guilders was largely financed by the citizens themselves. The sovereign, Lothar Franz von Schönborn, paid 250 guilders .

The building, made of red sandstone , has three arches with stone heads of envy . The bricklayers and stone setting family Raßberger from Alpbach in Tyrol designed all the jewelry on the town hall. She created the sculptures on the gable cornice , the keystones with the grimacing faces, the fruit reliefs and the window and door frames . The gable of the building is crowned by a roof turret with a bell.

Until shortly after the First World War , the city administration had its seat in the old town hall.

Trivia

The hall of the old town hall was the location of a special world record on December 1, 1858. Inspired by the achievement of an English barber to rid 70 men of their beards in one hour, the Buchen bath and barber Josef Baumann won the title of King of the Barbers . Under the eyes of official notaries, he managed to shave 94 beards off within an hour.
