The old town hall of Gmünd stands in the middle of the town square in the municipality of Gmünd in the Gmünd district in Lower Austria . Today's city ​​museum is under monument protection ( list entry ).

history

The building, erected in the 15th and 16th centuries, was used as the town hall until the 18th century. The tower was demolished after 1900. A restoration took place in 1929. After that, partly exposed to decay, the municipal council ordered the demolition in 1957 for the construction of car parking spaces, but this was prevented by the objection of the Federal Monuments Office .

architecture

The two-storey town hall building in the Renaissance style . The stone framing and the border of the window stone frame is sgraffito . The east-facing staircase under a roof porch was reconstructed in 1962. The gable tower with onion helmet and the roof turret were reconstructed in their former form in 1988.

A wall painting with the symbolic representation of the jurisdiction has been preserved in the council chamber on the upper floor. There is an oil painting of the city fire in 1726.

museum

The city museum was established in 1965. In 2008 the city museum was completely revised from a didactic point of view.
