The site has been proven to be the location of a textile factory as early as 1912, at that time operated by the Viennese weaving and knitwear company Anton Kunz & Söhne. In 1920 the factory went to the Viennese silk goods manufacturer Georg Samuel Eisenberger. Eisenberger had a new three-story factory building built by the Gmündner construction company Heinzel & Mokesch, which was completed in 1924 and whose characteristic appearance has been preserved to this day.

The border and castle town of Gmünd was systematically founded around 1200 at the Gemünde (confluence) of the Lainsitz and the Braunaubach by Hadmar II von Kuenring (around 1140–1217) and expanded in the first half of the 13th century. In 1217 a castle was named.
