The Gmünd Castle stands in the southwest corner of the old quadrangle in the municipality of Gmünd in the district of Gmünd in Lower Austria . The castle is under monument protection ( list entry ).

history

The castle was founded under Hadmar II von Kuenring and mentioned in a document in 1217. The original city castle at the southwest corner point of the city fortifications was built around 1300 as a four-tower castle. From 1262 to 1418 in the possession of the Liechtenstein family , from 1418 to 1484 the castle passed to the noble family Puchheim . Structural renovations were carried out after a fire in 1473. The castle was pledged to the Lords of Greiß in 1518 as sovereign property and sold in 1585. Expansion of the castle began in 1518. After 1601 the castle changed hands frequently. In the 17th century, with the construction of the north wing, a closed four-wing complex was created. From 1859 the castle belonged to Habsburg-Lothringen .

architecture

The essentially Romanesque building was rebuilt in the 15th and 16th centuries into a three-storey four-wing building on a trapezoidal floor plan with a gate tower and a keep in the southwest. The castle is surrounded by an English park. The originally defensive marshes in the south of the castle were drained in 1895.
