Old high German dictionary

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Old High German Dictionary (Ahd. Wb.) Dealt with here is a historical language stage dictionary based on the thesaurus principle . Its aim is to record and describe all of the Old High German verbs that have been preserved . A special feature of the Old High German dictionary is that the documents are not only described comprehensively semantically and named in document citations, but also all traditional word forms are listed in a formal part, sorted according to geographical, chronological and grammatical criteria. The Old High German Dictionary is a research project that is funded as part of the academy program and is located at the Saxon Academy of Sciences.

Sources and material base

The voucher archive consists of around 750,000 voucher slips excerpted from philologically critical editions. The material corpus was founded by Elias von Steinmeyer (1848–1922) and has been continuously updated since then. It includes all verbal evidence from the beginnings of German writing in the 8th century to late evidence in the 13th to 15th centuries. The evidence comes from all German dialects, from the Alemannic-Bavarian south through the various parts of Franconian to Low German-Old Saxon. Proper names and sprinkles in Latin legal texts have been postponed.

history

  • 1870: Julius Zacher's proposal to Elias von Steinmeyer to work out a new Old High German dictionary to replace the Old High German vocabulary of Eberhard Gottlieb Graff (1834–1842) prompts him to do preliminary work: the edition of Old High German glosses in 5 volumes (1879– 1922), the Smaller Old High German Monuments (1916), creation of the document archive by scrapping the glosses and the Old High German texts
  • 1925: Decision of the German Academy in Munich to publish an Old High German dictionary on the basis of Steinmeyer's preliminary work. The document archive is handed over to Carl Kastien in Cologne; Steinmeyer's original material order is destroyed during the transport to Cologne in a transport accident
  • 1934: The material is returned because Kastien does not have the time or suitable staff to process it
  • 1935: Resumption of work and conception of the articles by Elisabeth Karg-Gasterstädt and Theodor Frings in Leipzig
  • from 1945: Connection of the project to the Saxon Academy of Sciences in Leipzig
  • Start of publication 1952
  • 1990/1991: After the reunification, the project was confirmed as eligible for funding by the Commission of the Conference of the Academies

The current position manager is Brigitte Bulitta .
