Altin Volaj

Altin Volaj (born June 21, 1974 in Fier ) is an Albanian composer and music teacher.

Volaj played the accordion in his childhood and attended the music school in Shkodra. He then studied counterpoint and harmony as well as composition with Leontios Hadjileontiadis at the Conservatory of Thessaloniki until 2001 . Until 2003 he studied composition with Theodore Antoniou and Lukas Foss at Boston University , as well as with Vladimir Tarnopolski at the Moscow Conservatory. He continued his education with André Bon and Allain Gaussin at the Académie Américaine in Fontainebleau (until 2005) and was a student of Lawrence Moss at the University of Maryland until 2008 . Other teachers included Samuel Headrick (music analysis), Martin Amlin (fugue and composition), John Daverio (music history) and David Kope (music theory).

After teaching at the Conservatory of Thessaloniki, Volaj taught at Boston University and the University of Maryland. He was u. a. awarded the Prix ​​pour composition Nadia Boulanger of the Académie Américaine as best music student (2005), first prize at the Walsum Competition at the University of Maryland (2006) and between 2003 and 2008 annual prizes from ASCAP . His works have been performed by ensembles such as the Greek Ensemble of New Music , the Alea III New Music Ensemble , the Left Bank Quartet , the Boston University Symphony Orchestra , the University of Maryland Symphony Orchestra, and the Kronos Quartet . His opera ION was performed in 2008 by the Maryland Opera Studio under the direction of Leon Major and in 2009 by the Shakespeare Theater Company in Washington.
