As a conductor, Antoniou has worked with numerous important orchestras, including the chamber orchestra of the Boston Symphony Orchestra , the radio symphony orchestras of Berlin , Paris and Munich , the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra and the most important orchestras in Greece.

The list of works by the composer Antoniou includes several hundred works of all genres and genres. He saw himself as a “dramatic composer of abstract program music”: Stage and film music as well as opera compositions took up a large part of his work.

Antoniou's early work fluctuated between free atonality and a folklorism of Bartók 's style, but he soon began to incorporate serial techniques, mainly in small-format works. In the early 1970s, Antoniou composed some large-scale works under the influence of composers such as Jani Christou , Krzysztof Penderecki and Bernd Alois Zimmermann , without, however, losing any distance from the respective post-war avant-garde. Later, too, he repeatedly wove folklore elements into his music, his music to Sophocles' Oedipus auf Kolonos was brought closer to the musical language of Orff , Stravinsky and Bernstein (Giorgos Leotsakos).

A focus in Antoniou's work was music-theatrical works. In addition to almost 60 drama music, mainly for ancient Greek and contemporary theater and eight film scores, he composed some ballets and several scenic actions, often for actors and smaller orchestral formations, including "sound actions" specifically designed for television. In his instrumental music, which ranged from classical orchestral works and solo concerts to chamber music for soloists, works that incorporate electronic sound sources are particularly well represented, and Antoniou also created some works of purely electronic music . The vocal music, which is also very extensive, often referred to motifs from classical antiquity and modern Greece.
