Altmark Association for Patriotic History and Industry

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Altmark Association for Patriotic History and Industry was founded in Salzwedel in 1836 and is primarily concerned with the local history of the region around Salzwedel and Stendal , the Altmark . The first chairman of the association was the Prussian district administrator von der Schulenburg , the successor in office of Karl Marx's father-in-law , von Westphalen. The first secretary (managing director) of the association was the high school professor, local researcher and prehistorian Johann Friedrich Danneil . The club had to stop its activities in 1848 as a result of the revolutionary events. In 1857, Danneil re-founded the association and appointed the pharmacist and local researcher Theodor Zechlin as his successor , who led the association until his death in 1895 and published several annual reports of the association.
