Theodor Zechlin (local history researcher)

Theodor Zechlin (born October 20, 1818 in Lindow (Mark) , † November 19, 1895 in Salzwedel ) was a German local politician and pharmacist in Salzwedel and an important local researcher in the Altmark .

Live and act

After an apprenticeship as a pharmacist in Neuruppin together with the young Theodor Fontane , Zechlin settled down as a pharmacist in the small town of Salzwedel in 1847 , where he took over the Löwen pharmacy that still exists today and was later continued by his son Konrad. From 1857 Zechlin became the secretary of the " Altmark Association for Patriotic History and Industry " (successor of the important prehistorian Johann Friedrich Danneil) and published there numerous works on the history of the Altmark from prehistory to the present. His archaeological activities were particularly important, he secured numerous prehistoric finds in the region. His son Konrad Zechlin continued these research activities after 1895.

In addition, Zechlin was also active in local politics in Salzwedel and alongside Friedrich Ludwig Meinecke, the father of the historian Friedrich Meinecke, one of the leading figures of the Conservative Party in the city.

Theodor Zechlin was married to Konradine, daughter of Moritz Wilhelm Heffter . The two had seven children, and the descendants include numerous important personalities. Her grandchildren include the historian Egmont Zechlin (1896–1992) and the works teacher Ruth Zechlin (1899–1966).
