Alwin Koch

Alwin Koch (born December 30, 1839 in Lindau , † January 28, 1919 in Frankenthal in the Palatinate ) was a German classical philologist . From 1880 to 1909 he headed the Latin school and the Progymnasium in Frankenthal (Palatinate) .

Life

After attending grammar school in Augsburg and Kempten, Alwin Koch studied classical philology at the University of Munich . After the state examination (1864) he worked as an assistant (assistant teacher) in Bergzabern and in Kusel. In 1866 he went to study at the Latin School in Frankenthal, where he stayed all his life. In 1880 he was appointed headmaster (with the title sub-principal). It was on his initiative that the Latin school was converted into a Progymnasium (1894) and the school was rebuilt (1903). From 1894 Koch held the title of royal rector and study professor. On February 1, 1909, Koch retired. In 1903 he set up a foundation for gifted students at the school and gave her numerous books from his holdings. The foundation was lost during the inflation , the school library burned in the Second World War .

In addition to his teaching and administrative activities at the Progymnasium, Koch also emerged with scientific work. He wrote annotated school editions of the Iliad , the Odyssey and translations by the authors Ovid , Livius , Curtius Rufus .
