Alyssa is a feminine given name with multiple roots.

On the one hand, Alyssa is a form of the Old High German first name Adelheid and means "the beautiful".

On the other hand, the name, which is very popular in North America, is derived from the plant Alyssum (German: stone herb ). Alyssum comes from the Greek roots a- ("not") and lyssum (crazy). It used to be believed that the plant could heal skin diseases.
