Staying on the ground is a German action group for climate justice that has been advocating "drastically reduced air traffic, travel suitable for grandchildren and a future worth living" since 2018.

Demands and Goals

Staying on the ground is part of the global climate justice movement and, in particular, calls for a sharp reduction in air traffic . In their 10 core demands, they call for a socially just transport turnaround , which includes democratic transport planning, the replacement of flight routes by other, climate-friendly modes of transport, as well as the abolition of tax advantages and subsidies for the aviation industry. The group also criticizes the system of climate compensation by drawing attention to the problematic shifting of problems to the Global South and referring to its neo-colonial structures.

Actions and campaigns

Staying on the ground uses different forms of action such as actions of civil disobedience , public relations and educational events. The activists usually appear in penguin costumes, as penguins are birds that don't (or no longer) fly.

The group has carried out the following actions so far:

At the action at Berlin-Tegel Airport

Prevention of opening of BER 2019

In July 2019, the group published a video with a large campaign in which they satirically admit to having delayed the opening of BER Berlin-Brandenburg Airport for years through targeted sabotage in order to protect the climate. The video was widely circulated and a letter of responsibility was published.

Action at Berlin-Tegel Airport 11/2019

A sit-down with a banner drop at Berlin-Tegel Airport was organized in November 2019 . About 50 activists blocked the shopping street in Terminal 1 for about 2 hours and a banner with the words “ Canceled due to climate crisis ” was unfurled over the display board. The action received a lot of media attention, among other things because of strict police action. The strong police controls led to a lot of traffic jams and the temporary complete blocking of the access to the terminal.

#Safe People not Planes 2020

During the crisis surrounding the coronavirus , Stay Am Boden is participating in the international campaign #Safe People not Planes. It demands that public funds should not be used to unconditionally rescue the aviation industry, but that employees and the climate crisis should come first.

International networking, Stay Grounded

Stay Grounded is a member of Stay Grounded , a global network consisting of more than 150 organizations that are committed to reducing air traffic and creating a fair transport system. These are local airport opponents, climate justice groups, NGOs , trade unions or initiatives that want to promote alternative, climate-friendly means of transport such as night trains . The network organizes and organizes its own actions, campaigns and conferences and publishes thematic publications.
