The Amagi ( Japanese 天 城 ) was an aircraft carrier named after the Amagi volcano ("Heavenly Castle") , the Imperial Japanese Navy during the Second World War . It should not be confused with the Amagi battle cruiser of the same name , which was destroyed by the Great Kanto earthquake during its conversion to an aircraft carrier .

The Amagi was built by Mitsubishi in the Nagasaki naval shipyard . As the second ship in the Unryū class, its lightweight design was also based on the aircraft carriers of the Hiryū class.

An on-board aircraft squadron of its own never came on board. Provided were Mitsubishi A6M 8 "Zero" fighter planes , Aichi B7A "Ryusei" torpedo bomber / dive bomber and Nakajima C6N reconnaissance aircraft .

The Amagi half overturned after American air raids in July 1945 (photo taken in August 1946)

The ship was put into service in August 1944, but never took on any tasks other than air defense in the Kure area , where it was sunk on July 27, 1945 in an air raid. It was lifted in late 1946 and broken up the following year.
