Amalia Mendoza

Amalia Mendoza García ( La Tariacuri ; born July 10, 1923 in San Juan Huetamo , † June 11, 2001 in Mexico City ) was a Mexican singer and actress .

Life

Mendoza grew up in a family of musicians. Her three brothers Norberto, Eligio and Juan formed the Trio Los Tariacuri , and she performed as Las Taricuritas with her sister Perla . She began her career as a soloist in 1954 with a recording of Puñalada Trapera and then became known with shows on the radio station XEW . Titles such as Echame una culpa by José Angel Espinoza Ferrusquilla and Amarga Navidad by José Alfredo Jiménez became classics of Mexican mariachi music. In over thirty years she recorded 36 albums, including Las Tres Señoras with Lola Beltrán and Lucha Villa in 1996 . She also appeared in several music films in the late 1950s and early 1960s. For her services to Mexican folk music, she honored the Texan city of San Antonio as "Lady Mayor ad perpetuam".
