Amana German

The West Central German language Amana German or Colony German is spoken in the Amana colonies in Iowa in the USA , which have existed since 1854/55. These settlements were founded by radical pietist emigrants from all over the German-speaking area, but mainly from Hesse , who took their dialect with them and largely retained it. Since, as inspired, they had little contact with their environment and wanted little, their language remained relatively uninfluenced from outside until the 1930s. After this time, from a coincidence of several independent causes, “ the great change ” was decided, which brought the colony inhabitants closer to the outside world.
