Aerocaribbean flight 883 was a twice-weekly scheduled international flight from Port-au-Prince , Haiti , to Havana , Cuba with a stopover in Santiago de Cuba . On November 4, 2010, an ATR 72-212 of the Cuban airline Aerocaribbean had an accident near the town of Guasimal in the Municipio Sancti Spíritus in central Cuba. On board were 61 passengers and seven crew members, all of whom were killed.
Course of the accident and investigations into the cause
The machine was on a domestic flight from Santiago de Cuba to Havana on the evening of November 4th . The ATR took off from Santiago at 4:30 p.m. local time . At around 5:46 p.m., the pilots reported problems due to icing to the ground control center and asked for permission to change to a lower altitude. Immediately afterwards, they lost control of the aircraft and reported the emergency by radio.
Shortly thereafter, the plane crashed near Guasimal in mountainous terrain near the Sierra del Escambray . According to eyewitness reports, the plane was said to have flown quite low and restlessly before it crashed. Smoke and fire were also seen emerging from the machine. The flight recorders of the aircraft involved in the accident were recovered the following day .
It is unclear whether there is a connection with Hurricane Tomas , which was approaching at the time of the start of the aircraft involved in the accident in Santiago de Cuba , which caused strong winds and heavy rainfall in eastern Cuba. Flight Aerocaribbean 883 was one of the last aircraft to leave Santiago de Cuba. After that, the airspace was closed because of the approaching tropical storm .
The Cuban authorities announced that they would investigate the accident without foreign help. You have all the necessary prerequisites for this. External support such as an expert group from the manufacturer of the crashed aircraft, Avions de Transport Régional , was rejected by the Cuban authorities.
On December 15, 2010, the Cuban Civil Aviation Authority announced that the cause of the accident was a mixture of icing of the aircraft due to extreme weather conditions and errors by the crew in handling this situation. As a result, the flight was initially normal until the aircraft encountered extreme weather conditions at an altitude of 20,000 feet .
Victim
In addition to the seven crew members, there were 33 other Cubans and 28 foreign tourists on board the aircraft involved in the accident, including two Germans, two Australians, an Italian, nine Argentinians, a Spaniard, three Dutch, a French, a Japanese, a Venezuelan and seven Mexicans.

The aircraft with the serial number 459 and the aircraft registration number CU-T1549 had completed a total of around 25,000 flight hours and around 34,500 take-offs and landings by the time it crashed. The aircraft was equipped with two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW127 engines. The aircraft, which was completed in November 1995, has been operated by Aerocaribbean since October 2006. The accident was the third worst overall in the history of Cuban aviation. It was also the eleventh loss of an ATR 72 and the worst accident with this type of aircraft to date.
