Brycon is a widespread genus of the tetras (Characiformes) in South America .
features
The fish are ten centimeters to over half a meter long. Characteristic of the genus is the dentition, which consists of a pair of large, conical teeth in the lower jaw and smaller teeth adjoining them laterally.

The genus Brycon is widespread in Central and South America with a focus on the Amazon and the Paraná river system. Brycon hilarii has its main occurrence in the river basin of the Rio Paraná and the Río Paraguay , while Brycon opalinus is mainly found in the rivers of the Brazilian east coast in the Mata Atlântica . Brycon amazonicus is native to the Amazon basin. It is also very common in the Rio Tocantins and Rio Araguaia . Brycon insignis lives in rivers in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul .

Most species in the Brycon genus are vegetarian and feed on leaves, fruits, and plant seeds.
Way of life
Piraputangas and Matrinxãs like to stay in the densely vegetated banks of large rivers, where they eat mostly vegetable food. In clear waters, large schools and schools of the two species can often be seen in the bank zone under overhanging trees and bushes. The matrinxã develops into an omnivore with increasing size, which also likes to eat food in the form of small insects. During the dry season, even predominantly animal food, e.g. B. Some species of the genus Brycon such as the Matrinxã are main fish for pond farming and aquaculture in the Amazon. Breeders try to exploit the genetic potential of Brycon amazonicus for human consumption. Hormone treatments are supposed to accelerate the growth of the young fish.
