The Bryconidae are a family of South American freshwater fish from the order of the tetra . The family consists of four genera with a total of about 50 species.

The four genera of the Bryconidae were originally placed in the subfamilies Bryconinae (genera Brycon , Chilobrycon , Henochilus ) and Salmininae (genus Salminus ) in the family of the real tetras (Characidae). The close relationship between these groups is based exclusively on the comparison of DNA sequences from two genes in mitochondrial DNA and three genes from the cell nucleus and has not yet been supported by morphological features. In their external appearance, however, the fish are very similar. They are elongated, resemble trout or salmon and live in schools mainly in open water.

The relationships within the Bryconidae according to Abe et al. 2014:

  Bryconidae

 Brycon s. st. + Henochilus

 Salminus

Brycon chagrensis, B. henni, B. petrosus + Chilobrycon

The cladogram shows that the division into the subfamilies Bryconinae and Salmininae does not reflect the actual relationship and that the species-rich genus Brycon is not a monophylum . Within the order of the characiformes , the Bryconidae form a clade with the small hatchet-bellied characins (Gasteropelecidae) and the Triportheidae .
