The Triportheidae are a family from the order of the tetra species that is native to South America and the Caribbean island of Trinidad . The family consists of three subfamilies and two genera that are not assigned to any subfamily. All were originally placed in the family of the true tetras (Characidae). The close relationship between these groups is based exclusively on the comparison of DNA sequences from two genes in mitochondrial DNA and three genes from the cell nucleus and has not yet been supported by morphological features.

The fish are elongated, predominantly silvery in color, and are 4.2 to almost 25 cm long. They live mainly in swarms in open water.

Systematics

Currently, 23 species in five genera belong to the Triportheidae family.

The Triportheidae are probably the sister group one of the Beilbauchsalmlern (Gasteropelecidae) and trout or salmon-like Bryconidae ( Bryconinae u. Salmi Ninae ) formed clade . All three together are the sister group of the real tetras.
