Amazonis Planitia is a vast flat region on the planet Mars in Amazonis - degree field . It was named after the Amazons from Greek mythology .
The center of the region is 16 ° north and 158 ° west and has an area of around 2 million km². It lies west of the extinct volcano Olympus Mons .
Amazonis Planitia was formed in the geologically most recent phase of Mars formation, the Amazonian period , which began 1.8 billion years ago. By huge lava eruptions of volcanoes in the Tharsis region -wide levels have been trained. The formation of the Amazonis Planitia is believed to have been completed about 100 million years ago.
