Ambanja is a city in northern Madagascar on the Sambirano River. The city belongs to the Antsiranana Province . It is 700 kilometers from the capital.
The place is a marketplace for the surrounding villages. It had 12,258 residents in 1975 and 21,498 in 1993. Today one reckons with a population of about 32,000 people. The inhabitants belong to the ethnic groups of the Sakalava and Tsimihety . There has been a Catholic mission since 1848 and the city has been the Catholic bishopric since 1955.
The name of the place means "where there is hail".
