The Amberger Kaolinwerke Eduard Kick GmbH & Co. KG originated in two companies. The Eduard Kick company from Schnaittenbach was founded in 1833 by the penniless accountant Daniel Christoph Eduard Kick in the barn of the lion host Johann Popp. The Amberger Kaolinwerke (AKW) located in Hirschau were founded in 1901 by Kommerzienrat Georg Schiffer .

After the political change in the GDR , the Caminau kaolin factory passed into the ownership of the Amberg kaolin works in 1990.

In 1991 the Amberger Kaolinwerke took over the Kemmlitzer Kaolinwerke based in Kemmlitz (Saxony)

In 1993 the Amberger Kaolinwerke and Eduard Kick grew together to form the Amberger Kaolinwerke Eduard Kick GmbH & Co. KG.

In 1995 the Amberger Kaolinwerke with locations in Hirschau, Schnaittenbach, Caminau and Kemmlitz were bought by the Quarzwerke Group based in Frechen .

In addition to the opencast mine, a huge heap consisting of around 35 million tons of quartz sand was piled up over the years. Its southern slope is called Monte Kaolino and serves as an amusement park.
