Around 1900 a rich kaolin deposit was discovered while drilling a well , which has been mined in open-cast mining since 1904 . The resulting kaolin factory in Caminau is now one of the largest industrial employers in the region.

Caminau is known among archaeologists for its prehistoric burial ground, which was discovered in 1904 when the kaolin pit was opened up. It extends over an area of 500 × 200 meters and is one of the most important in Lusatia. The oldest documented graves date from the time of the corded ceramics , the youngest around 500 BC. Chr.
