Ambermoon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ambermoon is a role playing game by Thalion , which was released in 1993 for the Amiga . It was the second part of the unfinished Amber trilogy. At the time the game was released, scrolling 3D graphics were revolutionary for the Amiga.

Story and process

In Ambermoon you play the grandson of the hero from Amberstar . The player's grandfather tells at the beginning of the game that in a dream his companion, who was believed to be dead, spoke to him and warned of a new danger for Lyramion. So he sends the player on a trip to Newlake so that he can talk to the companion there.

During the adventure, the player not only travels to the Lyramionic Islands, but also the moons of this world. The game world is huge for the time. You meet loads of people, some of whom become companions of the player.

Graphics and space requirements

The graphics are a mixture of 2D iso perspective (outside world and in many buildings) and 3D first person perspective ( dungeons , special buildings, cities). The fight takes place in rounds and is lavishly animated in front of a static backdrop (especially the magic spells).

The very good graphics for the time, the large number of opponents, locations and the unusual size of the game world made nine floppy disks (+ a memory disk) necessary. Since hard disks for the Amiga were not very common, many disk changes and correspondingly long loading times had to be accepted when playing (especially before the battle scenes).

References to other games

Those familiar with the Thalion games could find many references to other games. So the main character from Lionheart could be recruited, as well as the main opponent from Amberstar . A dimensional gate takes you briefly into the world of the game Dragonflight .

reception

Thalion and the rest of the career

Ambermoon was a great success for Thalion, but could not prevent its downfall. For this reason, no third part of the Amber trilogy was published. Part of the Thalion team went to Blue Byte , where the graphically very similar game Albion appeared, which is therefore considered the unofficial successor to Ambermoon .

Ambermoon was only released for the Amiga. It was planned for DOS and Atari ST as well, but was never completed for it. If you still want to play Ambermoon today , you can do so with the help of an Amiga emulator (e.g. WinUAE).
