Amboto ( Spanish , Anboto in Basque ) is a mountain in the province of Vizcaya in the Spanish Basque Country , with an altitude of 1,331 m.

description

The Amboto is the highest point of the mountains of the Duranguesado (named after the nearby municipality Durango ). The mountains are commonly referred to as “Little Switzerland” and form part of the Urkiola National Park . The Amboto is made of light gray limestone and contains remains of corals and shells. The Amboto rock massif is located in the eastern part of the national park and runs through it from northwest to southeast.

On its south side, which is oriented towards the valley of Arrazola, it goes steeply (almost 1000 m) downhill. The north side slopes significantly more gently towards the Urkiola Pass . The typical ascent routes to the summit also start from there. To the east it forms together with the mountain Izpizte a saddle, which is called Zabalandi (896 m).

Together with the mountain range to which the Amboto belongs, is one of the most characteristic and famous peaks in the Basque Country .

Myths

The Amboto has always been surrounded by magic and mythology. The legend tells that in a cave near the summit Mari , the "Amboto lady", has her home, and it is said that when the weather is nice, you can see her sitting at the entrance of the cave and then see her pretty, combing blonde hair with a gold comb. It is not uncommon to see her passing as a fireball at Amboto at night in the direction of other places in the Basque Country, where she also has apartments or to the nearby Oiz mountain ; depending on where she has gone, there will be good or bad weather.

Ascents

The Amboto can be climbed from a variety of starting points. To the north is the steep slope (over 1000 meters) from the Atxondotal . From Urkiola you start the ascent from the famous sanctuary of St. Anthony (730 m). From the Atxartetal there is a long but easy path between the Alluitz (1034 m) and Amboto (1331 m) mountains . From Otxandio (549 m) or Aramaio (312 m), you walk over the extensive and grassy mountain saddle Zabalaundi (896 m), from where the Amboto presents its most impressive appearance; there the summit can also be climbed directly and you pass the caves of the Amboto lady.

Ascent time

  • Urquiola (2 hours)
  • Atxarte (2.5-4 hours)
