Ambrogio Maria Amèlli , real name Guerrino Amèlli , OSB (born March 18, 1848 in Milan , † August 25, 1933 in Montecassino ) was an Italian theologian, literary and musicologist, archivist and librarian and prior of the Montecassino Abbey . Amèlli carried out an extraordinarily varied research work in biblical studies, patristics, the history of liturgy and musicology.

life and work

Amèlli studied literature, music and theology at the Monza seminary . He was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Milan on September 20, 1870.

He initially worked as a librarian at the Biblioteca Ambrosiana and carried out biblical, patristic and liturgical studies there. In 1885 he entered the Benedictine Abbey of Montecassino and made his profession there on March 7, 1887 . In Montecassino he was an archivist for many years until he was appointed abbot of the Santa Maria Abbey in Florence in 1908. From there he went to Rome and worked on the revision of the Vulgate .

Amèlli's name is primarily associated with the restoration of ancient sacred music in Italy. He first advocated this at the first Italian Catholic Congress in Venice in 1874. In 1877 he founded the Italian church music association Santa Cecilia , of which he was president until 1885, as well as the magazine Musica Sacra , which was supposed to ensure that his new ideas in the field of church music were spread as widely as possible. In 1878 he founded the publishing house Calcografia for the printing of sacred music. After the congress for sacred music in Milan in 1880, he hoped that his Micrologo and his Antifonario would be published . However, due to a lack of funds, this publication had to be suspended. At the Congress for Liturgical Singing in Arezzo in 1882, which he sponsored , he represented the Solesme School , which advocated the restoration of the old Gregorian singing traditions, against the so-called Regensburg School . This effort was initially unsuccessful. Only with the beginning of the pontificate of Pius X was the subject of the re-establishment of the old church music taken up anew. Amèlli's theses were taken up again. He himself was asked to revive the now discontinued Italian church music association Santa Cecilia in the style of the German-speaking Cecilia Association . He then headed this association until 1909.

Among Amèlli's musicological publications, the following deserve special mention: La restaurazione della Musica sacra in Italia (Bologna 1874, The Restoration of Sacred Music in Italy), I difetti dell'organo italiano in confronto dell'organo estero (Milan 1879, The Defects of the Italian Organ compared to the foreign organ), the critical edition of Guido d'Arezzo's Micrologus compiled according to the most reliable codes (Rome 1904).

Amèlli also held a prominent position in biblical research. From 1910 he headed the commission for the revision of the Vulgate as vice-president .
