Ambroise Tardieu (born March 2, 1788 in Paris , † January 17, 1841 there ) was a French engraver . He worked as a cartographer and illustrator .

Life

Born the son of the engraver Antoine François Tardieu , he followed in his footsteps. However, he was trained by his uncle Pierre Alexandre Tardieu . He then entered the service of the Naval Cartographic Service ( Dépôt des cartes et plans de la Marine ) and then of the Cartographic Service for Fortifications ( Dépôt des fortifications ). Between 1811 and 1814 he was transferred to the forest administration.

He then ran his own studio with an attached shop, in which he made and sold prints for postcards and books. Although he worked quickly and finely, he had only moderate success. In addition to his business as an engraver, he also worked as a publisher, and from 1823 to 1824 he published the magazine La Muse française .

One of his main works was Iconographie universelle, ancienne et moderne , in which he published the portraits of around 800 famous people between 1820 and 1828. Furthermore, his interpretation of the deployment of the Napoleonic army to the battle of Austerlitz with the title La colonne de la Grande Armée d'Austerlitz . A volume with 36 copper engravings. He also illustrated books such as the novel Voyage du jeune Anacharsis en Grèce by Jean-Jacques Barthélemy .

Ambroise Tardieu was a member of the Société de Géographie .

The pathologist Auguste Ambroise Tardieu was one of his two sons.
