biography

Not much is known about the life of Antoine François Tardieu. At a young age he regularly signed his maps with the abbreviation A.-P.-F. and the additional address Place de l'Estrapade in the 5th arrondissement of Paris, where he lives. He derived the signature from the initials of his uncle and godfather Pierre François Tardieu . Only later did he use his own name. An exchange of letters with Thomas Jefferson , the American President, is also known. Tardieu had made a map of the upper Mississippi for him .

Tardieu was part of a dynasty of engravers, illustrators and cartographers. His brother was Pierre Alexandre Tardieu . His sons Ambroise and Pierre were also active in this trade.
