Ambrose Jackson

Ambrose Cyprian Jackson (born June 26, 1940 in Washington, DC , † November 14, 2009 in Hawthorne ) was an American jazz trumpeter and composer.

Life

Jackson learned classical trumpet. After his time as a volunteer in the army from 1962 to 1965, in which he a. a. played with the Herald Trumpets, he studied music and education at the Catholic University of America up to a master’s degree, before teaching at Howard University . Then he toured America and Europe with Otis Redding . He went to Paris, where he became a member of Marion Brown's band and toured Germany several times. In Paris he also played with Sunny Murray and Steve Lacy , founded a big band with Barre Phillips, and studied composition with Jean Catoire in the early 1970s as well as ethnomusicology up to his doctorate. In 1976 he spent in West Africa, where he also gave concerts in stadiums, and then moved to New York City, where he was part of Charli Persip's band for a long time . He spent the last decades of his life in Ellenville , where he worked as a music teacher and led two church choirs. In 2008 he performed his Woodstock Variations with the Woodstock Chamber Orchestra . His compositions were also played by Lou Blackburn's Mombasa . He has also recorded with the Art Ensemble of Chicago and with Anthony Braxton .
