America's Most Wanted was an American documentary television show that first aired on Fox from 1988 to 2011 , but was then shown on Lifetime cable for two more years . The broadcast was used to investigate criminal offenses and track down suspects.

The thematic predecessors of the program were the German-language program Aktenzeichen XY ... unsolved and the British Crimewatch . Each episode aired features in which actors re-enacted real crimes. Afterwards, the spectators were called to report as witnesses. According to their own statements, 1089 criminals had been caught by September 12, 2009. In September 1996, the show was canceled, a decision that was reversed after massive protests and after the replacement broadcast fell short of expectations.

The show was hosted by John Walsh , whose son was murdered in 1981. Walsh is also one of the owners of the National Museum of Crime & Punishment in Washington, DC , which is where the show's television studio was located.
