The American Cream Draft Horse is the only draft horse breed from the USA and is named for its cream-colored fur.

Exterior

The American Cream Draft Horse is a medium-weight draft horse with a handsome head, broad chest, short strong back and well-muscled hindquarters. The height is 152 to 170 cm.

The coat color is a light, medium or dark cream color, the skin is pink, the mane and tail are white. The eyes are amber or hazel in color. These properties are caused by the champagne gene . The foals are born with almost white eyes that gradually darken over the months. White badges are welcome.

The American Cream Draft Horse is willing, friendly and balanced and is therefore well suited for beginners.

Breeding history

The American Cream Draft Horse is the only cold-blooded breed from the USA and was recognized as an independent breed in 1944. Almost all American Cream Draft Horses go back to a cream-colored mare named Old Granny , who was born between 1900 and 1905 and was bought by a breeder at an auction in Iowa in 1911 . Old Granny has produced numerous cream foals and became the first registered American Cream Draft Horse. Various breeds have been crossbred over the years, including the Shire Horse and the Percheron .

Today there are only 400 registered horses of the breed, the status is classified as critical by the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy .
