The American Guitar Academy was founded in the USA in 1991 . The school opened its first international location in Tokyo's Bunkyō District , Japan , in 2011 . It claims to be the only guitar school in Japan that offers lessons in different languages ​​such as Japanese , English , Spanish , French , Italian and German . The American Guitar Academy teaches in all styles of acoustic and electric guitar from jazz, rock, blues , pop, funk, classical , flamenco , tango, folk to R&B and much more.

In October 2014, the American Guitar Academy opened its second location in the Roppongi district of Tokyo's Minato district . The school currently employs eight guitar teachers from eight countries.

Their courses range from beginner courses to advanced courses in private or group lessons, to guitar ensembles, a live performance workshop, music theory, sight reading and ear training, which is all part of their "International Music School Program" (IMSP). Their International Music School Program prepares students interested in studying abroad for a music college level, and the IMSP Music Theory, Sight Reading, and Aural Training courses are open to all instruments, not just guitar.

Michael Kaplan, the current director of the American Guitar Academy, authored a book on bebop guitar transcription, published by Berklee Press and Hal Leonard. He also worked on a guitar accompaniment book with Dr. Mike Diliddo and Jamey Aebersold together.

The American Guitar Academy is currently in the process of working with Bill Edwards, the author of Fretboard Logic, as well as Truefire, one of the largest online video guitar teaching reference books on the internet.
