The American Surgical Association (ASA) is an American medical scientific society specializing in surgery . The organization was founded in 1880. ASA is based in Beverly , Massachusetts . It describes itself as the oldest and most renowned surgical organization in the United States.

As with other medical scientific societies, the purpose of the ASA is to promote research , teaching and patient care in its field. This is achieved in particular by holding an annual scientific conference . The ASA's 138th annual conference was held in 2018.

The founder and first president of the ASA from 1880 to 1883 was Samuel David Gross . Its current President (2019/2020) is Robin S. McLeod . [outdated]

In order to be elected as an "active member" of the ASA by co-opting , one must, according to the statutes, be at least 30 years old, have completed a medical degree for at least five years and have made a name for oneself as an active doctor, author, teacher or researcher to have. As a rule, the newly elected members hold a full professorship . The number of active members is limited to 460 (as of 2015). When they reach the age of 60, the active members become "senior members" (Senior Membership) and free up their space for younger members, but retain their voting rights for co-opting. The number of senior members is not limited. Active members lose their status if they miss three annual meetings of the Society without excuse. In addition to the active members and senior members, there is also an honorary membership for particularly deserving surgeons. The number of honorary members is limited to 50.

Together with the European Surgical Association , the ASA publishes the Annals of Surgery as a scientific journal . The Annals of Surgery has been published since 1885. Its impact factor in 2013 was 7,188. According to the statistics of the ISI Web of Knowledge , it ranks first out of 202 journals in the surgery category .

The ASA awards several scientific prizes. Her highest honor is the ASA Medallion for Scientific Achievement , which has been awarded since 1970. The best-known winners include Robert Edward Gross , Owen H. Wangensteen , Francis D. Moore , Michael E. DeBakey , Thomas E. Starzl , Norman E. Shumway , M. Judah Folkman , Basil A. Pruitt , Bernard Fisher , John W. Kirklin , Samuel A. Wells , Steven A. Rosenberg, and Denton A. Cooley were numerous pioneers in surgery (and allied fields) and a Nobel Prize winner in medicine, Joseph E. Murray .
