Amir al-Dandal (also Sheikh Amir al-Muschrif al-Dandal , Arabic أمير الدندل, DMG Amir ad-Dandal ; * 1980 in Deir ez-Zor ) is one of the heads of the tribe of al-Uqaidat (Aghedat). With the beginning of the protests, which culminated in the civil war in Syria in 2011 , he became known as a political and civil society activist.

life and career

The Dandals are one of the leading clans of the Bu Kamal, a sub-tribe of the Uqaidat Federation, which in turn is one of the largest tribal associations in Syria . They settle in the vicinity of the city of the same name ( Abu Kamal ) in the Deir ez-Zor governorate .

Although his family traditionally had good relations with the Hafiz al-Assad government , in 2011 Amir al-Dandal was one of the first tribal representatives to distance himself from the repressive methods used by the Syrian regime to suppress the protests. Together with other tribal leaders, Dandal wrote a manifesto calling for "freedom and dignity" for the Syrian people, who received a great deal of attention in Syria.

In 2014 the so-called Islamic State took control of a large part of the Bu Kamal settlement areas. Dandal worked as an activist against "IS" and served the international media as a source of reports on the situation in the Syrian-Iraqi border area.

According to Arab media reports from January 2018, Dandal took part in secret talks between representatives of various Syrian ethnic groups in Berlin and other European capitals. According to a report by the Bild newspaper from December 2018, which also appeared in its international edition, these discussions took place over several years and led to a charter of reconciliation for "coexistence in Syria". The signatories of the document include tribal representatives and other leaders as well as notables from the Alawite community, from which Syria's President Bashar al-Assad came.

A so-called Council of the Syrian Charter emerged from the initiative in 2019 . In 2020 Dandal was elected its deputy spokesman.

Dandal is the grandson of Sheikh Mushrif al-Dandal, a tribal leader who led an uprising against the mandate authorities in 1919 after the British occupied the central Euphrates region under the British Mandate of Mesopotamia . One of Amir al-Dandal's uncle was the politician Fahd Muschrif al-Dandal, who was elected to the Syrian Constituent Assembly in 1961 as a representative of the Uqaiat tribe .
