Rampage in Devínska Nová Ves
The rampage in Devínska Nová Ves or (especially in non-Slovak media) rampage in Bratislava occurred on the morning of August 30, 2010 (Monday). A 48-year-old man killed seven and injured at least 15 people before committing suicide.
location
The crime scene and district Devínska Nová Ves (about 16,000 inhabitants) is located in the northwestern outer area of Bratislava on the border with Austria on the March ( Okres Bratislava IV , about 15 km from the city center) and consists of a mixture of the old village and a modern prefabricated housing estate , where the rampage occurred.
course
The rampage began at 9:40 a.m. ( CEST ) on the second floor of a prefabricated building above a kindergarten on Ulica Pavla Horova (Pawel-Horov-Straße), where the perpetrator first entered an apartment and shot all five family members present. Then he left the building and killed the sixth family member in front of the entrance. The first police officers arrived two minutes later; Ambulances came at 9:45 a.m. Then the perpetrator fired at random at pedestrians and at people on the balconies. At least 16 people were injured. A woman standing on a balcony was also shot dead. At the same time, the residents were warned by loudspeakers to stay away from the windows. When the perpetrator was surrounded by the police in front of the kindergarten and shot by a police officer, he committed suicide at 10:15 a.m.
Shortly after the shooting, the location was blocked by the police and DPB bus routes were diverted. Vehicles were not allowed to enter the area and all exiting vehicles were checked. The lock lasted until 6 p.m.
Perpetrator
After a 15-year-old drug addict was initially reported, the actual shooter turned out to be a 48-year-old man who had been unemployed since 2008. During the rampage he wore earmuffs and shot with the self-loading carbine CZ 858 "Tactical", a modification of the Czechoslovak orderly MPi Model 58 for the civilian market. He also carried two other rifles with full magazines. Contrary to initial reports, according to the President of the Police Corps Jaroslav Spišiak, he was not a professional soldier, but only completed basic military service. He was, however, a member of a shooting sports club and lived one floor above the family who had been murdered in their apartment.
After he was hit in the chest by a police officer, he killed himself with a shot in the head.
Victim
According to initial reports, the first six victims belonged to a Roma family. Four women and a man were shot dead in the apartment, and another man was shot in front of the entrance. According to the neighbors, bad relationships are the cause, as they were considered "unadaptable citizens" in the area because of frequent nightly riots. According to other reports, the dead family was not of Roma origin; only the man shot outside is supposed to be a Rome. The police cited neighbors' disputes as the most likely motive, while racist motives were considered not very likely, despite the perpetrator's well-known antigypsy attitudes. The seventh victim was a woman who was shot on the balcony. She was not related to the first six victims. She was only discovered dead by her returning husband that afternoon.
Reactions
Shortly after the shooting, the news about the rampage was taken over by the international media; so had z. B. BBC , CNN or Al Jazeera this news as one of the main events of the day on their websites. The shock after the rampage was particularly great in Slovakia, as there had not been any comparable deadly rampage in the country's history; the last comparable event took place in March 1999, when a clash between the Mafia in a restaurant in Dunajská Streda claimed 10 victims.
Politicians at all levels, from the mayor of Devínska Nová Ves (Vladimír Mráz), to the mayor of Bratislava ( Andrej Ďurkovský ) and the head of the Bratislavský samosprávny kraj ( Pavol Frešo ), to the parliamentary president ( Richard Sulík ), prime minister ( Iveta Radičová ) and state president ( Ivan Gašparovič ), expressed their condolences. The government canceled its open house on September 1st and ordered national mourning the following day.
After a quick government decision, the victims were given humanitarian aid and a funeral grant.
The Minister of the Interior, Daniel Lipšic , ordered the police to be armed with scorpion submachine guns on all patrols . He promised to change the weapons law so that all machine weapons converted to self-loading weapons are also prohibited in the civilian sector. On August 1, 2011, a new catalog of criteria finally came into effect, which was decided as a long-term reaction to the rampage in May 2011 and which greatly tightened the conditions for obtaining a gun license. It also sets new criteria for people who already have a firearm. In both cases, a personal psychological examination is mandatory.
