Ira Samin is a well-known and highly respected criminal psychologist. The day she wants to end her life, she has to go on a mission. A hostage situation takes place on the radio station where her youngest daughter works. The hostage taker is playing a game with all of Germany. He randomly calls people who have to answer the phone with a certain slogan, otherwise he kills one of the hostages in the studio. Jan May (the hostage taker) has only one demand: if he can talk to his fiancée Leonie Gregor, he ends the game immediately. The only problem is that, according to police files, Leonie died in a car accident months ago. Together with the editor-in-chief "Diesel", Ira tries to find out what really happened to Leonie, and he delves deeper and deeper into secrets. In doing so, she also reflects more and more about her own life, which has fallen apart after the suicide of her oldest daughter.
