Amparo Montes

Amparo Montes (aka Amparo Meza Cruz ; born April 22, 1925 in Tapachula ; † January 13, 2002 in Mexico City ) was a Mexican singer.

Amparo Meza Cruz made her debut as a singer at the age of fourteen on the XEQ channel in the Quiero trabajar program . During appearances in the XEW in 1943 Emilio Azcárraga Vidaurreta gave her the stage name Amparo Montes. She made a name for herself as one of the last great Mexican bolero singers. In 1970 she opened La Cueva de Amparo Montes , where she performed regularly for thirty years, accompanied by a guitarist and a pianist. Her repertoire included compositions by Agustín Lara , Gabriel Ruiz , Gonzalo Curiel , Alvaro Carrillo , Armando Manzanero , Mario Ruiz Armengol , Miguel Prado , Miguel Pous and others. She became known with titles such as Azul , Perfidia , Hay que saber perder , Piensa en mí , Cucurumbé , La Muñeca Fea , Ya Nada Soy , Pensando en ti and Tu ausencia .

In addition, Montes also worked as a singer in some film and television productions. Maricarmen de Lara made a documentary about her in 1993. The Museo de la Ciudad de México dedicated a tribute to her on the 60th stage anniversary under the title Señora Bolero , on which Pepe Jara and José Amado , among others, participated. Her last appearance was in November 2001 at the Barrio Antiguo de Monterrey Festival . Two days later she was hospitalized with pneumonia and died there in January 2002 of a heart attack.
