The RMA Amphi-Ranger 2800 SR is an all -terrain swimming vehicle with selectable all-wheel drive . The fittings manufacturer Rheinauer Maschinen- und Armaturenbau GmbH (later Rheinauer Maschinen- und Armaturenbau Faulhaber & Truttenbach KG, then RMA Rheinau ) built it between 1985 and 1995 as a special vehicle for pipeline maintenance.
The self-supporting, tub-shaped body with roll bar and initially three and later also five doors is made of seawater-resistant, three, and sometimes four millimeter thick aluminum sheet. The SR in the model designation stands for s eewasser r esistent. The car is powered by a Ford V6 engine (as in the Granada and Scorpio models ) with 2.8 l displacement and carburettor until 1986, after which there were engines with 2.9 or 4 l displacement and petrol injection . Connected to the engine is a manually shiftable 4- or 5-speed gearbox with a 2-speed countershaft, which transfers the engine power to the rear wheels when the all-wheel drive is switched off. The manufacturer specifies the minimum speed with 3.5 km / h and the gradeability with 85% (40 °) The Amphi-Ranger was optionally offered with a 4-liter machine and an automatic transmission. All wheels are individually suspended on double wishbones with mini-block coil springs. The front and rear axles are identical. The rack and pinion steering works with servo assistance. Disc brakes are used as service brakes on all wheels, the parking brake acts on a brake disc on the cardan shaft
A ship's propeller ( Z-drive ) is folded out electrically for driving in the water . It is steered with the front wheels or with a fold-out rear rudder (special equipment). The maximum speed for water travel is 15 km / h. The fuel consumption is almost 20 l / 100 km in the field and up to 24 l / h in the water.
The cars were primarily ordered by pipeline operators around the world. The vehicle was also available to private individuals, but was rarely ordered. The Hessian water police used this vehicle from 1987 to 2000 on Edersee and Diemelsee . The vehicle has since been in the Police Oldtimer Museum in Marburg.
