history

The original amphitheater in the English Garden was located north of the Chinese Tower from 1793 to 1807 and south of the Kleinhesseloher See , near the current bridge to Königinstraße and Thiemestraße. The flower ring association under the then President Pankraz Freiherr von Freyberg had been planning to rebuild the theater since the early 1980s. The background to the efforts was the amateur theater play, which the flower ring operated first in a private garden and later on a meadow in the English Garden since 1973 every year in July. Increasingly more viewers were enjoying the pieces, which gave von Freyberg the idea of looking for a sufficiently large and sustainable place of activity in the English Garden.

The location of the original amphitheater was no longer an option because of the trees that were worth protecting. A roundabout completely surrounded by trees and bushes was found to be the ideal place in the Hirschau , roughly in the middle between Aumeister and Kleinhesseloher See. The construction could also be realized because the then Bavarian State Minister of Finance Max Streibl , the Bavarian Administration of State Palaces, Gardens and Lakes and the City of Munich supported the project. The Munich population also spoke out in favor of the theater in a survey. More than 200 donors ensured the construction costs of the theater in the amount of 95,645.45 DM. A plaque set in the floor on the side of the theater reminds of all donors.

The architects and members of the flower ring, Christoph Zobel, Horst Weber, Klaus Weißenfeldt, designed the building plans and the model of the theater after the previous building, on August 12, 1983 the building application was submitted to the state capital Munich. In a contract dated November 3, 1983 with the association as the developer and the Free State of Bavaria as the property owner, it was agreed that the theater would become the property and maintenance of the Free State of Bavaria without reservation after completion.

Venue
