Pankraz Freiherr von Freyberg (born June 7, 1944 in the Palais Ostein in Geisenheim in the Rheingau) is a German art historian and cultural manager and was director of the Festival European Weeks in Passau from 1995 to the end of 2011 .

Live and act

He comes from the old Swabian-Bavarian noble family of Freyberg . After attending the humanistic grammar school in Würzburg, he studied law at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz and at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . There he studied art history, archeology and Bavarian history and received his doctorate in art history in 1983. The subject of his dissertation was the life and work of the Munich painter, etcher and lithographer Maria Electrine Freifrau von Freyberg , b. Stuntz.

During his studies, Freyberg founded the blossom ring theater group in Munich , which made a name for itself through theater and costume festivals in the Altschwabingen tradition, including the performance of "Sappho" by Rudolf Levy (1977), "Lohengrin" by Johann Nepomuk Nestroy ( 1979 and 1985), "Doctor Sassafras or Doctor Death and the Devil" by Franz Graf Pocci (1980), "Genoveva or The White Doe" by Julie Schrader (1981), "Lysistrate" by Aristophanes (1982) and "Serenade" by Slawomir Mrozek (world premiere and Italian premiere, 1984).

In the circle of his friends, he suggested rebuilding the amphitheater in the English Garden , initiated an association for this purpose and a fundraising campaign with it. In 1985 the club, of which he was chairman until 2009, donated the venue to the Free State of Bavaria. The bloom ring ensemble performed various plays here under Freyberg's direction in the following years. In 1986 he hosted A midsummer night's dream, a seven-day guest performance by the New Shakespeare Company , London, in the Munich cultural center on Gasteig , the first foreign language event after its opening.

For the 200th birthday of the English Garden in Munich, Pankraz von Freyberg initiated a 17-day cultural festival in 1989, which he also oversaw as artistic director. Around three million visitors came to the over 150 theater, music, dance and sporting events as well as the historical pageant. The program also included the Kocherlball at the Chinese Tower, which he brought back to life after a decade-long break , which has taken place annually since then and attracts thousands of dance enthusiasts.

The festival of the European Cultural Foundation Europamusicale , which he initiated together with Helmut Pauli in Munich in 1993 and was the artistic director , also goes back to his idea . The aim was to promote a Europe of mutual trust, respect and friendship after the Iron Curtain was opened . For this purpose, 33 symphony orchestras from 31 European countries presented classical music with at least one work from their home countries in the program in the Munich Philharmonic in Gasteig , in the Herkulessaal of the Residenz and in the Prinzregententheater , with a prominent personality from the respective nation giving a speech in the National language on the subject of Europe. These included u. a. the philosophers Raimon Panikkar and Andrei Pleșu , the writers Friederike Mayröcker , Märta Tikkanen , Jiří Gruša , Cees Noteboom and Andrzej Szczypiorski and the composer Mikis Theodorakis . The radio broadcasts reached approximately one billion listeners worldwide.

In 1994 Freyberg took over the position of artistic director of the Festival European Weeks Passau , which he directed from January 1, 1995 to December 31, 2011. He gave them a new profile - with a thematic focus of the program with an annually changing motto, a variety of disciplines unsurpassed in Germany, with the awarding and premiering of commissioned works of the performing arts and the expansion of the festival region to Austria and the Czech Republic. In addition, he created permanently new program formats, so u. a. in 1996 for the Passau Cathedral and the organ there (largest cathedral organ in the world), the world's first organ night lasting from sunrise to sunset with internationally renowned organists, then the Sunday piano matinees "piano nobile", the so-called "dream day in Bohemia" which crosses borders two to four cultural events, the picnic concert, which together with the political scientist Heinrich Oberreuter the "Passau Tetralog", a discussion forum in the University of Passau on the annual theme of the festival with important personalities from politics, culture and business.

In 1999 the European Weeks Festival in Passau was accepted into the Association Européenne des Festivals because of the high quality of its program . The artistic director also created a new economic basis through cooperation with over 200 entrepreneurs. The 2007 Festival was recognized for this by the “ Germany - Land of Ideas ” initiative; in the same year they received the European Culture Prize of the Swiss foundation Pro Europa. In his last year, 2011, he managed to raise more than 700,000 euros for the festival for 83 events from around 350 sponsors. After leaving, Freyberg stated that he wanted to continue working as a cultural manager.
