In 1864 it had 7222 inhabitants. In 1966 it had 17,355 inhabitants with an unchanged area of 107.41 km². In addition to the town of Niedermarsberg, it included the towns of Helminghausen, Padberg, Beringhausen, Bredelar, Giershagen, Borntosten, Leitmar, Heddinghausen, Canstein , Udorf and Erlinghausen. Obermarsberg did not belong to the office.
The office existed until December 31, 1974. At the turn of the year after 1975, the so-called Sauerland-Paderborn law came into force. There it says in paragraph 13 paragraph 3: “The office of Niedermarsberg is to be dissolved. The legal successor is the city of Marsberg. "
