Official register of municipalities in Switzerland

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The official register of municipalities in Switzerland includes the political municipalities in Switzerland , classified according to cantons and (where available) districts .

Official municipality register

The official municipality register is used as a definition basis for unambiguous municipality identification and uniform spelling of municipality names in numerous administrative processes at federal, cantonal and municipal level as well as in the private sector. The directory also contains the municipality number (so-called BFS number).

The ordinance on geographical names ( SR 510.625, Art. 19) regulates the official register of Swiss municipalities. The municipality names and municipality numbers in this directory are binding on the authorities. It is created, administered and published by the Federal Statistical Office . The authority responsible under cantonal law submits requests for approval of name changes to the Federal Office of Topography, which publishes them in the Federal Gazette .

The previous municipality register is in need of revision. The current numbering system is increasingly reaching its limits in merger projects such as in the cantons of Thurgau , Friborg and Ticino . EDP-supported historization is not possible with the current system. These deficiencies are to be remedied with the publication of a historicized community directory (published in June 2007) and a renewal of the numbering system.

Historized municipality directory

All the municipalities and their mutations since 1960 are recorded in the historized municipality directory , which can be queried separately . This enables a largely automatic update of the official municipality directory and facilitates the conversion of municipality-related data in the time axis.
