history

In 1801 the pharmacist Johann Baptist Heckler founded a pharmacy in Mainz-Kastel on the basis of a privilege granted by Archbishop Friedrich Karl Joseph von Erthal . Johann Baptist Heckler was the son of the pharmacist Stephan Heckler, the owner of the pharmacy in Eltville . In 1803, Heckler took over his father's pharmacy and sold his previous one in Kastel in 1804 to the pharmacist Friedrich Christian Neuper, who moved it to Hochheim.

In 1806 Neuper sold the pharmacy to Wilhelm Schwärzel, who received a privilege from Duke Friedrich August to operate it . In accordance with the medical edict of 1818, Wilhelm Schwärzel was appointed official pharmacist for the Hochheim office and remained in this position until his death in 1827.

After his death, his widow became the heir to the pharmacy and had it administered by provisional agents. In 1835 the provisional W. Jung married a daughter of Wilhelm Schwärzel and was appointed official pharmacist. Jung was a leading pharmacist in the Duchy of Nassau. He became a member of the examination committee in 1845 and received the title of medical assessor. After his death in 1865, Hugo Ulrich bought the pharmacy in 1866 and became the last Nassau official pharmacist in Hochheim. From 1867 Ulrich ran the pharmacy in Wallau as a branch pharmacy.

building

The office pharmacy building at Frankfurter Straße 8 is located on the site of the former “Zum Löwen” inn, which was demolished around 1920. The late baroque basket arch gate entrance made of light, now painted red, sandstone from the old inn was integrated into the new building. In the wedge of the gate are the letters A and F above a wine barrel. The original wooden door from the first half of the 18th century has been preserved.
