The municipal garden of the city of Halle is in the immediate vicinity of Giebichenstein Castle on the banks of the Saale .

It is part of the historic parks of Saxony-Anhalt . Reichardt's garden is a few meters away from the official garden . Together with two other objects in the city, they are integrated into the monument conservation and tourism network garden dreams . This pursues the goal of rediscovering the garden cultural heritage in Saxony-Anhalt. The park is now used for local recreation, as a tourist experience area and as a horticultural and cultural facility.

History of the park

The origins of the 3.78 hectare official garden, which has been a protected part of the landscape since 1994, was an orchard and ornamental garden of the Archbishops of Magdeburg at Giebichenstein Castle . The complex was built after 1740 under the bailiff Johann Christoph Ochs von Ochsenstein as a magnificent baroque garden . He was probably also its namesake. The garden was structured by strictly orthogonal axes and avenues and was then equipped with fountains. The slopes around the Römerberg were shaped by rare trees, and there were orchards and vegetable gardens at the castle. This appearance remained until 1773.

This year there was a redesign. A hall flood had previously flooded and destroyed large parts. Bailiff Heinrich Remigius Bartels and his son carried out this redesign in the style of a landscape garden . The model was based on the Wörlitz gardens and Goethe's garden in Weimar . The landscape park, enriched by ponds, grottos, squares and friendship urns, was in harmony with the neighboring Reichardts garden .

In 1906 the garden together with the castle was taken over by the city of Halle. In 1907/09, the city gardening director Emil Berckling created the basis for today's official garden. They renewed it from the ground up. So the Römerbergkuppe was blown up and new paths and stairs were created. The area of the former swan pond was filled in and greened to become today's official meadow. Themed gardens with rhododendrons , roses and ornamental flowers have been laid out on the terraced southern slope of the Römerberg . Here you can still find some valuable old solitary trees and rare species such as ginkgo , leather sleeve tree and pagoda tree .

After 1945 parts of the garden were reconstructed on a modest scale. Berckling's plans served as the basis for this. The themed gardens and the viewpoint on the mountain were restored in the 1990s as part of the garden dreams project. Today there is also a play and climbing sculpture on the grounds of the official garden.
