history

The ape man in the logo

The Anís del Mono company was founded (1868 or 1870) by the brothers José and Vicente Bosch in Badalona. The bottle label is unusual, and there are various accounts of its origins. This bottle label shows an ape man who has the facial features of a man, but has a completely hairy body and a monkey tail - and in his right paw resp. Hand holding a scroll that says, “He's the best, science says so, and I don't lie” and holding a bottle in the left. A genesis assumes that this motif was chosen because the Bosch family kept a monkey as a pet that was also in their schnapps factory; According to another tradition, the Bosch brothers wanted to provocatively caricature the views of Charles Darwin, which were popular at the time , according to whose evolutionary theory man descended from apes; or the belief in science as a whole should be caricatured by the label.

Manufacturing and characteristics

Since the company was founded, the aniseed schnapps has been distilled according to the original recipe - consisting of aniseed, neutral pure alcohol, distilled water, syrup made from refined and filtered sugar as well as various herbs and aromatic carriers in historical copper barrels from the 19th century. The dry version of the schnapps ( Anís del Mono Seco , with a green label) is made from the same raw materials as the sweeter Anís del Mono Dulce (36 vol. Alc.); the dry aniseed, however, has a higher alcohol level (44 vol. Alc.) and a lower proportion of sugar. Both aniseed schnapps are preferred as an aperitif , digestif - both pure and diluted - or as a mixed drink, such as Carajillo de Anis , for example .

Trivia

The clear glass bottle with the corrugated surface and the unusual ape-man label inspired the painter Juan Gris for his painting “Anís del Mono” in 1914 (see gallery).
